On my own.

I was riding in the car with my mother the other day. She decided to start in on me about money. She's always thrown it in my face how her and my stepfather have been paying for my college. It's almost as if she enjoys it, it's some sort of sport to her how many times she can make me feel like I'm in her debt. The other day was the final straw! My mother informed me that she could have a new boat and new furniture if it weren't for me and my education. That did it for me! She went too far. I told my friend Allison about what she said, and how I might be leaving the Art Institute.

I found out that I could apply for financial aid at my school and not have to pay until after I get out. It's just so scary... I've never been on my own before. My mother and I talked today. She thought I was unappreciative of all that she and my stepfather had done for me.

Please realize, I'm not! I appreciate what my stepfather has done for me more than anything. In many many many many ways, he has been a better father to me than my real father. The point is, that it's time for me to grow a pair and stop relying on others for everything. I need to do things on my own, it'll be good for me. I'm 100% sure that this is what I need to do right now. I'm not, however, 100% sure that I can do it on my own, but I'm going to do it or die trying!

I've always had things taken care of for me. Money was never a major issue until now. It's terrifying me to be on my own! What if I crash and burn? All I know is that I can't have my mother making me feel like I'm garbage for accepting money. I guess she likes the power she has over me. No more. i can't let this happen anymore.

Thats whats on my mind right now. I hope my mother an I can call a truce one day, I'm sure we will, but I won't be speaking to her for a while. I'm going to be okay... at least I hope so. I'm going to learn how to balance a checkbook, do laundry, manage a bank account, all that crazy stuff! I'm going to do it! For me, it's now or never! So, I'm going to be just fine. I just hope I have the strength to make it.

I just discovered this whole new species of animal! I had no idea that these things were real! I heard about them in medieval movies and stuff like that, but I never knew that they still like exsisted! They're soooooo uber cool, but they'll kill you if you go near them, which is kinda sad because I want to hug them and give them suga!

Yes peeps, this time I did a mainstream film instead of an indie. Mainly because I've been hearing a lot about this movie, and everyone knows that I adore a good slasher! So here are my thoughts on My Bloody Valentine.

10 years ago the town of Harmony suffered a major massacre on Valentines Day when an insane miner killed tons of people. 10 years later, Tom(Jensen Ackles), who was one of the few who escaped the serial killer, returns to Harmony to settle his dead father's estate. He doesn't get a welcomed return after the psychotic miner returns and begins killing again. The only one in Harmony he can trust is his old flame, Sarah(Jamie King) who has married his old friend and now Sheriff Axel(Kerr Smith). Now Tom has to face the demons of his past as the town folk begin to drop like flies and fingers begin to point to him.

My Bloody Valentine is a remake of the 1981 cult classic by the same name. Now I have not seen the original, but after seeing this film I plan on doing so. It's obvious that the director and screenwriters were going for that old school feel, and it actually works. Some of the camera angles could have been better, but the movie still shines. It's good gory fun, which is rare in today's mainstream cinema. This is the first mainstream slasher/horror film that I've actually liked in a very long time. And the ending! It had me guessing! It took me a minute to figure it out, and thats rare for me.

The acting is actually good too, I mean, this was meant to be a fun, popcorn munching flick, none of these actors were there to get Academy Awards. Still, Jensen Ackles pulls off the whole 'guy haunted by disturbed past' very well. I've been a fan of Jensen ever since he played Eric on Days of Our Lives. I pretty much grew up with him, plus his facial expressions are not laughable like most of the goofs in horror films these days and his character shines through. Kerr Smith is another actor who deserves some note. Like Jensen, Kerr has become somewhat of a idol for teenage girls. Both of these actors have proven that their teeny bopper days are far behind them and they're ready for more serious stuff. Kerr pulls off the asshole sheriff well. Jamie King, what can I say about Jamie King? Hmmm... it's almost as if she rented every slasher film she could get her hands on and watched all the parts with screaming women in it over and over to research her part. There is nothing special she brings, or even tries to bring to the role. But like I said, no one is in this movie for Oscars!

As for the film itself. It's not an atmospheric piece. By that I mean, it doesn't set a creepy mood and the setting just didn't have that spooky factor to it at all. Its the same old foggy forest and the same old dark tunnels and the same old abandoned shack that we've seen in every horror film. With that said, I honestly don't believe that this film was meant to be seen like that, I think the people who made the film just wanted to give die-hard slasher fans a show. And they did!

Don't you just hate it when psychotic miners get in the way when your trying to get a frozen pizza? It sucks!

The blood and guts in this movie practically drip down the screen, but not in a bad way. Somehow this film manages to use a bunch of blood, but not over do it in a way to where we're all like yawning by the end. They keep it looking real, unlike filmmakers who just throw the buckets of gore at the camera and call it a wrap.

The film also pleasantly surprised me by not making me wait 30-45 minutes before I get to see some real gore! 10 minutes in they just throw you into the deep end! Theres no hesitation whatsoever! You get to see at least 20 dead people before the main characters get to say page of their script! The miner just goes medieval on all these people! It's intense, I'm not even gonna try and act tough and say 'It wasn't that bad' because it was!

The crazy miner 'picks' on Jamie King! Get it? Because he's trying to murder her with a pick axe? Hehehe! It's funny!

Then there was the nudity! This chick stays nude for a full 4 or 5 minutes, and believe me, you get to see it ALL! I'm talking full body! It all just hangs out right there for ya to see! Then the crazy miner chases her... while she's still completely in the raw! It's insanity! I was sitting there going 'What!' Don't get me wrong, she's very nice to look at... I mean REALLY nice... I actually felt kinda dirty watching it! LOL!

I guess she's running away from good acting skills... I know I'm mean! She wasn't that bad!

So, my main point is that this movie is great for those horror fans who like kickin it old school and for those gore hounds who just want to see the red stuff spewing out. This movie is a must see for any horror fan! So go rent it! Theres also a way you can see it in 3D, but I think you actually have to buy the movie to see that.

Scarce

Okay peeps! I watched #3 of my four Memorial Day movies. This time I watched the slasher Scarce. It's an independent film which didn't have a lot going for it. For this movie to even be on shelves at a major rental store like Hollywood Video is awesome for these guys. By these guys I mean Jesse T. Cook and John Geddes who acted, wrote, directed and produced this film.

The movie follows three friends, Owen(John Geddes), Dustin(Thomas Webb) and Trevor(Jesse T. Cook) on a snow boarding trip. After a wild night of partying the the three start making there way back home on the snowy highway. After getting lost they stop by an unusual diner where they get bogus directions and end up in a car accident. With Trevor badly hurt, Owen and Dustin head out into the snowy woods to look for help. They finally find a house and a seemingly kind old redneck to help them retrieve their friend from the wrecked car. When they get back to the car they find Trevor is gone. The redneck graciously offers them a warm place to stay, at his house, reluctantly they agree. Soon Dustin and Owen are caught in a web of horror that is as harsh and cruel as the winter woods that surrounds them.

Omigah! It's a creeper! Who needs some teeth whitener...

All in all, you have to look at this movie from the right angle. This is only the second movie these guys have ever done and the first they've ever starred in. I thought the acting was very good, especially for a bunch of first timers. I ended up actually caring for these characters and their outcome, which is a very rare thing for me in slasher films. The old redneck who tortures the guys is creepy, but just the right amount, he doesn't go overboard with his act. I'd have to say the best performance was that of Thomas Webb, who played Dustin. This was his first acting job ever and he managed to pull off his character well.

Scarce does rely mainly on the gore factor for a majority of the movie. Most of the movie is simply blood, guts and torture. Think of Hostel meets Deliverance and you kinda get the feel of this movie. What I loved about the movie the most is the scenery. The white winter that surrounds these characters is almost a character itself. It takes on it's own persona as you watch these poor guys struggling through it. The snow is in every scene and it's deceptive as hell, just like the hillbilly who trapped these guys. It looks gentle and kind, but it's actually torturous and unforgiving.

There are a couple of things I did not like about the movie. One, in the beginning when it first shows the three friends at a ski resort, there's hardcore metal music playing. This contrasts extremely with whats going on at the moment. You basically see this calm winter snow falling gracefully at this relaxing resort with these three guys smiling and laughing and hearing crazy metal and screaming as the sound. I thought that was a poor choice of music for this calm scene, but whatever. Then these guys keep referring to their parents as if they're still controlling their lives.

These guys look like they're in their 30's or late 20's. I don't know if they were trying to make the audience believe they were teenagers or like 21, but it didn't work. They kept saying things like "Man, my dad is going to kill me if I don't get back." It's kinda laughable. Whats great about this movie and the people who made it, is that they don't seem to take everything too seriously. Even in the credits they name two party girls who we see naked for no reason "Gratuitous Nude Girl" or something like that! It's hilarious!

This is exactly how my Aunt Patty dresses when she goes out on Saturday nights.

So by all means rent this movie if you're in the mood for something totally out there and gross. A major must see for gore hounds. Be warned that there is major cruelty and torture in this and also some nudity from both men and women. So until next time peeps, Peace out!

Okay peeps! I can't begin to tell you how much I detest Mia and Will on Days of Our Lives! They suck so bad! They're the worst thing to happen to daytime television since The Rosie O'Donnell Show! I mean... omigah! It's not that their acting is bad, it's just that it's so bad that it actually makes me want to puke! Seriously! I can't eat anything whilst I watch them! Plus he is so unusual looking! His mouth is huge and he's eyes are too narrow. Taylor is a pretty girl, but that's it. She can't act even if someone was holding a tazer to her butt and ordering her. I know DOOL has fallen on some hard times with the economy, but I think you can loosen the purse strings a little for actual talent. I'm pretty sure a blob of maynaise has more talent and personality than Dylan Patton! I could just strangle the casting director! Any who, thats whats on my mind at the moment!

Conjurer

Okay peeps! Time for movie #2 of my Memorial Day weekend screenings. This time I watched Conjurer starring Andrew Bowen. You might remember Andrew from MadTV's golden era, you know, when it was actually still watchable. Andrew seemed to disappear after he left the show, but he's officially made his comeback in this spooky little ghost flick. First off, I should say that I don't scare easy when it comes to movies, but there were times in this movie that literally made me jump out of my skin!

After the loss of their unborn child, Shawn(Andrew Bowen) and his wife, Helen(Maxine Bahns) move to the country to get away from the hectic city. Helen's brother Frank(John Schneider) buys them a lovely house and they begin to settle down. After a while, we soon learn that the property comes with a dark past, a past which begins to haunt Shawn. Soon the couple's blissful life is turned upside down when Shawn finds himself fighting for his wife's life.

The movie has Sunday SciFi Channel feature written all over it! The title Conjurer has two meanings to it, and it's up to you to figure out which one is the right one. The movie is such a typical ghost tale that has been told many times over. However, this film actually relies on geniune fear and tactical scares than most other Horror films. This movie doesn't have blood and guts spewing out of everyone like most horror films do these days which is truly refreshing. The acting is actually good! When I saw Andrew Bowen's name on the credits I thought it would be horrid, but he proves he can act outside of the genre of comedy.

Maxine Bahns plays Andrew's wife in this and she's very good. I've never heard of her until now. She brought a lot to the movie as a grief stricken woman trying to move on with her life. She was also very HAWT! She provided some eye candy for the guys. Now, John Schneider plays Maxine's over protective brother, and of course he's great as the country boy. The other cast does a great job too, though none of them stood out to me as anything too special.

The movie's atmosphere had definate creep factor. The entire movie revolves around this spooky looking shack in the backyard of the house. And of course the shack is at the edge of the woods where a creepy looking kid is running around. The scariest part of the film is toward the ending when this scary looking woman is chasing Andrew around the house! OMG! It's just so wrong! Everytime the poor guy tries to turn a light on the bulb lights up, just for a tiny second so we can get a slight glimpse of the ghost lady's face before the bulb explodes. It freaked me out majorly! They did an awesome job! My favorite quote of the film? "I don't want to pull witch hair out of my bath tub drain!"

Unfortunately, the screenwriters and director took the easy way out with the ending. The movie was awesome up until then. I thought the movie was stupid good until I saw the way it ended, it was such a major let down... but not for long. Just when you think it's over it's not. It's almost as if the screenwriters wrote a new ending after they saw the original and then went back and filmed the very last scene to try and recover. They do salvage the ending a little, but it leaves you with a big question mark.

So all in all I'd say the movie was well worth the rent. It scared the crud out of me during certain parts! It you're looking for a good, creepy feeling movie, go out and rent this. It'll definately put a chill or two in ya. Just remember not to piss off any ghosts.

While She Was Out

So! This Memorial Day, I've decided to rent movies! I know, I know, I rent movies every weekend, but I decided to rent some to celebrate Memorial Day... none of them have anything to do with Memorial Day, however, they are movies I have never seen, and I shall discuss them because this is my blog and I've decided to talk about it. So! First up is the movie While She Was Out.

I was in a bookstore sipping a chocolate ice coffee drink, scanning the magazine section(Because lets face it the only reason to go to bookstores is the killer magazine section!), and I picked up the Fangoria magazine. I flipped through it and saw the article on this movie. It looked interesting enough, so I rented it at Hollywood.

The movie is about a suburban housewife named Della who has an extremely low self esteem and lets people just walk all over her. From the start of the movie we see that she's very sad and very unhappy, especially with her abusive husband. The only light in her life is her two children. On Christmas Eve she makes a last minute shopping trip to the mall to grab some wrapping paper. When she finds a car that has taken up two parking spaces (When she needs one.), she becomes extremely upset over this and leaves a note on the windshield of this car. Little does she know, the owners of this car are extremely dangerous. Soon Della finds herself fighting for her life, with nothing to defend herself but the contents of a toolbox.

So! Here we go! Kim Basinger stars as Della and she's freggin awesome! People have been hating on this movie, claiming that it's not a 'real' horror film or a 'real' thriller. People have even made fun of Kim Basinger saying shes too old or whatever. Kim has starred in tons of movies, she even won an Oscar. She was kickass in this movie, her character goes through this incredible transformation, and Kim prooves she can still roll with the best of them.

Fear the toolbox!

Lakas Haas does a great job as a villain that we all just want to strangle. The rest of the cast just seems silly. They do a decent job, I'm not saying that they're horrible, I just think that they needed a little more time to get into their characters. Don't get me wrong, the guys who played the punks who are trying to kill Kim Basinger's character do their jobs by making me hate them.

In many ways, this movie is much more than just a horror/thriller, its about a woman learning how to stand up for herself. It also shows humanisim. This suburban, sophisticated, meek, all around sweetheart, transforms into this vicious animal trying to make it through a living nightmare.

These four punks, pure street trash decide to terrorize this woman just because she decides to leave a note, calling them selfish for double parking in a mall parking lot on Christmas Eve! The busiest night for a mall! I don't know if any of you have tried to park at the mall on Christmas Eve, but just let me tell ya, it ain't easy! So for her to leave a little not on the windshild of a car who took up two parking spaces so carelessly made her my hero automatically!

Unfortunately for her, these people took it bad... very bad. She ends up running through a forest, trying to hide from them. She soon learns that hiding isn't going to help. She realizes she has to fight. One by one the punks begin to face her rath and it gets bloody.

The violence in this isn't too bad. There are a few moments that make you cringe, but not too much because it's mainly her doing the damage to the punks. She does it all with the contents of a red toolbox.

The punks are after her! But it's ok, she's got her toolbox!

All in all I really like this movie. It has a lot of great things going for it, so check it out if you get the chance. That concludes my first Memorial Day weekend film review. Not much of a review, just my thoughts on it. So until later!
